Other universities don't know
what to do with NC's. Kenneth
Vickery, dean of admisins at
Clemson University said "We don't
know what it means. Was it a
failure? Was it a Drop? There is
always the element of doubt!"'
He said Clemson doesn't assign
any value to the NC and looks more
at the students' overall .
However, Vickery ade, "You
can't escape the element of doubt
about the NC."
Officials at the University of
Virginia said they saw very few
NC's but they said they would have
to interpret them as failing grades.
However, Grover Lawerence, a
UVa Official, would not say they
didn't count in their con
siderations. "It is going to be a
possible factor," he said.
Another university that has the
NC system is Stanford University.
However, their system is quite
different from either the USC
system or the one at N.C. State.
Robert Houghton, assistant
registrar at Stanford, said they
have a philosophy of achievement
in their grading system. He said
the NC's do not appear on the
