Awarene. From Staff Reports Hunger Hurts, a group of USC students and faculty, is ing a pre- Thanksgiving campaign to make the University community aware and involved in. the world hunger crisis. "The purpose of the campaign," according to - George Duffie, chairman of the University Chaplains, "is to ruin everybody's Thanksgiving. Perhaps if we all realized that every day 15,000 people 'starve to death, Thanksgiving would be more meaningful." The Hunger Hurts prograni was conceived by the University Chaplains in relation to the World Food Conference meeting this month in Rome, Duffle said. Floods on the Indian sub-continent and the drought in Africa, com pounded by the low grain crop in the U.S. this year, have produced mass starvation in these areas. The program's emphasis isn't limited to hunger abroad.' Manlutrition is a reality in South Carolina, said Mazie Ferguson of the South Carolina Council for Human Rights. "But hunger in South Carolina is not the same as in other parts of the world," she said. "In the countries like Africa we are speaking of hunger in the midst of famine. Elmer Schwartz, of the College of Engineering said the -hunger committee will take up a collection and divide it between the hunger relief programs of Church World Service and the South Carolina Council for Human Rights.
