Record, From Page One Peyton Teague, said they have very few applicants with NC's on their records. He said the students who apply with NC's on their record find it more difficult to get in. "We equate an NC with an F. We do not use the NC but recalculate' the GPR with a zero in the NC's place. This brings the GPR up with other schols equivalent," Teague said. "Even a C is not # good grade in Chemistry and it is hard to get in most schools with them," he said. Teague said the present enrollment of Chemistry graduate school is about 64. He,said there is no limit right now on the number of students the graduate school can accept. He said, however, "the number of fellowships are very limited and we cannot support any more at the present time." Another school who said they counted the NC as an F when considering an applicant for graduate school was engineering. John Waugh, dean for graduate students, said "we count NC's as F's. We compute our own GPR substituting a zero for the NC." Other factors considered were the applicants class standing and his overall grades, Waugh said. He said it made a great difference when the applicant made his NC's. "We look for a period of growth especially in the last two years," he said. Waugh said the engineering school is reluctant to turn down qualified applicants because there is a shortage of engineers. However, Waugh also said the funds are limited on the number of fellowships the engineering department can give. They said*the figure was used to help them evaluate the student under the old system. Robert Beamer, of the Phar macy Department, said the GPR means nothing. He said he looks to the quality of the student and his overall record. However, he said there were people who considered candidates for pharmacy who figured a GPR to see what it would have been under the old system. The Director of Masters of Public Administration, Brian Fry, said he goes through the transcript and does an informal GPR tran sformation but said this did not influence his decision abdut an applicant. He said it is difficult to determine what the NC means except that they indicate some failure in the student and it is sometimes better to get an NC because a C might hurt the student more than the NC. He believes some faculty members are ex tending the C range so that it is hard to tell what the grades mean anymore. The C itself is a doubtful grade and the D is. unacceptable. The NC is rather convenient." He said he would prefer. the traditional grading system because it's easier for the schools to determine the standing of an applicant. Most of the graduate studies directors told The Gamecock they would prefer the traditional system because it is easier to evaluate the student, but all ad mitted beyond the NC the overall record was important. Pierce Liles, of the College of Business Administration, said they try to consider the whole record. The Foreign Language Department also said they look at the entire record rather than the specific NC's. Stephen Ackerman, director of graduate studies, said the request for admission is examined by all the faculty. He said they look for a steadily im proving record because "you can bet that the applicant will be a good student for graduate school." However, Ackerman admitted some people on the admissions board were going to look at the NC's as F's. "It's inescapable that a lot of people are going to look at the NC as an F. When I go over the record I do not consider them as anything." The Physical Education Department said it used a Juniors! Dr. John Spurgeon said the GPR is just one of many considerations. He said two or three NC's wouldn't affect the applicant's chances of getting in graduate school that much. The freshman year was not important in his consideration of an ap plicant, he said, as much as the rest of the students career. Some departments are very crowded and the applicant -is screened for a higher GPR. Dr. Stephen Haynes director of graduate studies in psychology said he looks at the four years and does not'penalize the student for the first two years. He said the GPR of the applicants has to be higher because the great com petition to get into psychology. He said out of 400 applicants last year in the clinical psychology program only -12 were accepted. Some schools said they had no problems. with NC's. The education and art school said they did not look at NC's or figure any kind of supplimentary. GPR, Education officials said all they required was a degree from an accredited university and good test scores and two letters of recom mendation. Art graduate school officials said they look more at the students portfolio than grades. Harold Hanson director . of art graduate studies, said they try to look for promising artists.
