William Nolte, head- of the

the system stronglyk The
"University of South Carolina has
the lowOxt standards of any school
on the eat coast," he said. It's like
Catch-22. It is the most farcical
thing in the world. The system is
an Injury to both the students and
the University."
If the University does decide
to change systems again it is not
going to be an easy process. The
process of changing records and
setting up the computer for a new
system could be monumental. The
changeover from four years ago is
not even completed, George
Walters of computer services said.
.He said readmit students from four
years ago are still having their S
and F's recalculated when they
return to school.

He said he has seen people finish
the pressures of the semester and
have no time or only one day to go
into the demands of final exam
week.
He. said if the administratin
tends to complain about this, then
they should remember that the
reason they are here is for the good
of the students. The bill, said
Putnam, would help make the
"environment. conducive" to the
student body. The bill was passed
by the senate.
Another bill brought up before
the senate concerned providing
funds for Women's Affairs to bring
a guest Opeaker to USC. The bill
provides 'forthe transfer of funds
($455.75) from SAC unallocated
funds account to the SGA
Secreta0y of Women's Affairs
Account. Lynne Perri, secretary
of Women's Affairs, told the senate
the guest speaker would be Nan
Bailey, the Socialist party's
candidate for mayors of
Washington, D.C.
The senate's vote on the bill was
split halfway, and Allen Lawhead,
president of the senate, broke the
tie by voting for the bill. The bill
was sent to Leventis, who ap
proved it.
Among other things that hap
pened in the senate-a bill was
passed which called for the
movement of fire alarm trigger
mechanisms to "safe" places in
the dormitories; that is, where
outsiders could not easily set off a
false alarm. The bill was passed.
Also-, Eileen Berlin was ap
proved for the Facility and
Grounds Advsory committee.
She said there have been other
student appointees, but they never
show up for committee meetings.
One last ltem-D)onna Bise,
manager of the 8GA Book Ex
change, reported to the senate that
the store had been broken into on
the Saturday night -of
Homhecoming, and $245 had been
taken.

Jack Cooper, director -of
computer services, said the
process of change-over would take
about one year and cost between
$40,000460,000 in direct expenses
not including the computer time
and -supplies.
He said the changeover would

He said the main point for any
changeover is that he gets specific
instructions because there are a lot
of combinations on a computer.
Cooper said,'Haste is a luxury we

Leventis said,as soon as some
funds are available the student
senate is going to send out a
questionaire to ,ampld student
opinion on the qestion of a change
in the system. Leventig said he had
no strohg opinion on the system
either way at the present time. He
said he would do whatever the
student body decided on.
Dr. Nicholas P. Mitchell..,
registrar of the University, said he
had not heard from any official
sources that the system was going
to be changed but he kncw that
many people were not saatisfied
with the system as it was.
"We don't look upon the NC as a
prejudicial grade but it does mean
tht you have failed in some wayto
complete the course," he said. It is
more of a subconscious thing when
other schools see the NC. Many
schools see an F instead of an
'N.C."
