Sports Editor Bass's amazing show Ron Bass's performance Saturday night was truly amazing, especially considering: 1) He had run the ball only 40 times in USC's six previous games; 2) He had gained only 128 yards rushing previously; 3) It was his first start of the season; 4) It was the first time he played most, let alone all,.of a game this year. For a quarterback, running the ball 39 times in one game is almost unheard of, as is gaining 211 yards in the process. The only thing to compare Bass's game with is last year's game with Ohio University when Jeff Grantz rushed for a NCAA quarterback record 260 yards. Bass was phenomenal in the third,quarter, gaining 109 rushing yards in 14 carries and leading USC to three touchdowns, missing a fourth one only because he fumbled the ball on the North Carolina one-yard line and the Tar Heels recovered it. 'Knew we'd have to score' "I knew we would have to score just about everytime we had the ball," Bass said after. the game. "I thought they would score more than they did." Actually, with Carolina's defense forcing six North Carolina fumbles, the Tar Heels' offense was kept in check most of the game. USC dominated the game with 468 yards rushing, compared to 269 for North Carolina. North Carolina did have 151 yards passing, with Chris Kupec completing 14 of 20 passes, but most of the passing yardage came late in the game when USC was conceding short passes while guarding against long ones that could have changed the game's complexion. Bass's terrific game brings up another question-what does Paul Dietzel do when Grantz, who missed the game with a cartilage injury to his knee, is ready to play? Previously Grantz was the starter, with Bass playing perhaps one-third or more of every game. Bass rushed 39 times, a school record, in. dissecting a Tar Heel defense that held powerful North Carolina State to 177 rushing yards a week before. Carolina had 468 rushing yards, with running backs Kevin Long, 96 yards; Jay Lynn Hodgin, 63; and Randy Chastain, 51, helping out. Bass's yards-per carry average was 5.4. Bass passed only four times, completing one for 15 yards. The victory erased any ideas that USC's win over Mississippi last week was a fluke, and it gives the Gamecocks a 2-5 record.
