Biddies ti behind te USC's junior varsity football team remained undefeated with a 27-0 win over Clemson's Cubs Monday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. OREE BANKS ...team win$ second. "We played with enthusiasm," said head coach Oree Banks. "It was a game the players were looking forward to." "I think the whole team played well as a unit and it is hard to single out individuals," he said. Banks did mention that freshman quarterback Randy Martz, a 6'3", 195 native of Elizabethville, Pa. directed the team well, and that he has a great future ahead of him. Martz completed four of 12 passes for 65 yards and rushed for 90 yards on 21 carries and scored one touchdown. A safety and a 23-yard field goal by sophomore Dale Steele provided the USC junior varsity with a 5-0 halftime lead. Unknown Tar Heel stands out As the North Carolina football players -filed out of the dressing room following the opening game this year, a Tar Heel cheerleader pointed toward a tall, blond player and asked a friend "Who's that?" "Are you kidding?" was the reply. "That's our quarterback." It is no real surprise that the cheerleader did not recognize Chris Kupec. Hobbled by injuries last season and used sparingly two years ago, Kupec had distinguished himself only as a freshman passer three seasons ago. But there is no one on the North Carolina sports scene today who doesn't easily recognize Kupec. The senior signal-caller from Syosset, N.Y. has emerged as one of the brightest stars in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "Anybody who thinks Chris Kupec can't run with the football is mistaken," says Tar Heel Coach Bill Dooley. "When we analyzed our quarterbacks, Billy Paschall was the better runner. .But we naever said that Kupec can't run." It Is in the passing department, however,, that Kupec has really excelled. Up to last week, he had completed 38 out of 53 passes for 717 yards and amazing percentage of 71.7. He has thrown three touch down passes. Kupec was a stranger to professional scouts when the season began-but not any more. One scout said, "That kid has one of the bt arms in college football. riva. ams' enthi In the third period the Biddies went 55 yards in 12 plays for their first score of the game. Freshman Lance Garrett followed a block by Steve Courson into the end zone from two yards out. Steele added the PAT. Ahead 12-0 Carolina got the ball right back when Clemson fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the 25-yard line. Six plays later Martz scored on a three-yard run around the left end. The PAT was no good and,the Biddies led 18-0 at the end of the third period. Following a Clemson punt early in the fourth quarter the Biddies marched 55 yards in 12 plays to consume much of the fourth period. Freshman halfback Brad Pease from Farmington, Mich. scored USC's final touchdown on a two-yard run. Steele added tie PAT. With the score 25-0 a Clemson center snapped the ball high over the punter's head into the end zone ror a safety to round out the coring. "This has got to be one of the best lunior varsity or freshman teams wver at USC," said Banks.
