Tandy Construction Company, of Charlotte, began work on the $3.7 million addition Oct. 15, Ed Bass, an official with Campus Planning, said Tuesday. "1'he main purpose of the addition is two fold. "Basically, we will be adding on the Campus Shop," Bass said, "and, above that, a ball room area."t After construction, the Campus Shop will move into a 25,000 sq. ft. facility on the ground floor of the addition, he said. The ballroom of the three story addition will be 111 ft. by 62 ft. and it can be divided into three rooms by two portable walls, Bass said. "The ballroom will be a multi purpose room," Robert Todd, director of the Russell House said. "It..could be used for a banquet a small concert, a lecture, or a small one-act play." In addition, Bass said that the ballroom will be equipped with a projection room for films. Also, the addition will add five new meeting rooms and two meeting lounges. Construction on the 19-year-old student center is expected to be completed within one and one-half years, Bass said. At the present time, officials are not expecting the same material problems, which face workers on the biology building. One major problem during construction lies in the post office. "Distribution of mail has been moved to Booker T. Washington," Todd said. "Stamps, and pick-up of mail by students is the only thing remaining (in the Russell House). "Eventually, they (the boxes) will go, too,"-Todd said. He was unsure where the post offkee will be placed after con struction is completed. "A decision will be made around January." The latest construction is the third addition made on the Russell House in 19 years. In 1958, the cafeteria was ex panded, and the second floor was added above it. In 1966, the west wing (towards the Undergraduate Library) was added.
