Debat BY SID GRIFFIN Of The Gamecock staff The Carolina Debate team held a British-Union style debate Monday at Capstone's Campus Room on the topic, "Resolved, that the powers of the Presidency should be significantly curtailed." The debate was scheduled so the Carolina student body could get to know the team and something about debating, according to Thorn Compton, the director of debate. "Most people, and certainly the students, really don't know what debate is all about,".said Compton. John Ivey, the debate's chair person, explained the British Union styles being "based on the traditional House of Commons style, with hissing, booing, and heckling allowed. The audience is split into two sides and as something is said that they don't agree with they switch sides to show their agreement with the opposite view." At the end of the debating by the formal opponents, Ivey said, the floor is opened to questions from the audience to the debaters on points made in the debating. At the end the entire audience leaves through a door marked "pro" or "con", which is their way of voting to see who won the debate. Monday's debate pitted Mike Pulley and Mary Wilson as the "pro" team, and Bob Coble and APO's escort service cranks for another year Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity is again con ducting an escourt service on the U.S.C. campus. Any coed desiring transportation from one part of campus to another should call 3825 Monday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. The escourt service is an annual project of Alpha Phi Omega. The debate team's next tournaments, all within the next month, will be at Emory, Wake Forest, South Connecticut. The team will have its own Carolina Intercollegiate Tour nament on Dec. 7-8 with schools from all over the country (tenatively including UCLA), and that the team will also hold a clinic for High School debate teams in the near future.
