USC's soccer club suffered it's
most frustrating defeat of the
season Tuesday afternoon at the
hands of Davidson as the Wildcats
utilized the strong play of Joe
Duncan enroute to a 3-0 victory.
The game started slowly with
USC applying most of the pressure
but USC muffed several early
scoring opportunities and that
seemed to be the inspiration
Davidson needed. Ken McCord
missed several good shots very
early and the momentum turned
about half-way through the first
period.
Bad breaks seemed to hurt
Carolina early in the game, and the
remainder of the afternoon was

Tal Albertson injured his knee
and had to leave the game with
17:20 left in the first period.
Seconds later Jefferson had to
make a diving stop of Duncan's
first shot to prevent a score, but
later Jefferson lost his footing and
Mike Giduz scored on a soft corner
shot with 12:02 left in the period.
The Wildcats played strong
defense the remainder of the
period to shut out USC and lead 1-0
at the half.
Davidson wasted no time pad
ding their lead in the second half as
Bill Hawk scored in a scramble
around the goal after only 44
seconds had elapsed.
Davidons continued to play a
balanced game built mainly
around an extremely tough

defense. Davidson very seldom
allowed USC's leading scorer John
Rosier to control the ball and when
Rosier did get the ball he was well
covered.
USC finally did set Rosier up on a
breakaway with about 26 minutes
left in the game but the Davidson
goalie made a good stop of Rosier's
hard corner shot.
USC, realizing the cruciality of
the situation, made several
desperation moves to generate
some offense. Ken Jefferson
moved to right wing and Karl
Jennings replaced him as goalie.
Albertson also reentered the
game with a taped knee but it sbon
became apparent he was ex
tremely handicapped. This
combination did generate some
offense but USC still couldn't
score.
