imSiger Vi .By MARK MORROW Of The Gamecock Staff In February a 1973 USC broadcast journalism graduate, Andy Marchez, and a 24-year-old folk singer named Larry Rhodes met in the Golden Spur, where Rhodes was performing. Seven months later that friend ship led to Rhodes first record on Southern Trails Records. Not only was it Rhodes first try at recor ding, but it was also Southern Trail Records first try at the recording business. Marchez owns the record company and is also Rhodes manager. Before Marchez met Rhodes he had already formed a booking agency, Southern Trails Talent. He employs such locally popular groups as Justice, Horizon and folk singer Bob Brown. But the booking agency is just a part of Marchez's total design. Marchez hopes a major recor ding company will hear Rhodes and give him a chance to make it "big." "The chance that a major recording company will pick up on this record are very good," he said. "It is a tremendous record. The equipment to record the record was rented from United World of Music on the Charleston Highway, Marchez said, and the musicians came from one of his groups, Justice. Allen Lawhead, a pre-ined student at USC, played saxophone and flute on the record. Joey Henderson, a music major and Carolina Bands member, played drums for Rhodes. Doug Lawhead, an Irmo High School Student played bass. Rhodes, who- described himself as more of a poet than a musician, said he has been playing guitar since he was about eight. He grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. And went into the Air Force in 1969 to spend four years in the service. He took a tour at Vietnam while he was in the service. He said he got a lot of ideas for his songs from that experience. He said he met a nurse in Vietnam who heard him play and asked him to do a show. "The people seemed to enjoy what I did, so I continued to perform," he said. Rhodes described his songs as being about people and how they react to situations. He said he learned a lot about people in Vietnam. "When people get backed up in a corner, their true nature comes out," Rhodes said. He said the main influence on his music are other folk singers like Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot. The folk singer has been to Columbia three times. His third trip, last week, was to play with Jim Stafford at the Columbia Speed way, an event that only drew 140 people. But for Rhodes, the crowd and fame are second in importance. "I've got something to say. I want to communicate with people. I have no desire to be famous, I just want to get songs across. It would be great if one of my songs inspired someone to do something," Rhodes said. "If I became too big, I might lose something in my music," he added. He said the song about someone who .is "pret special." The song is jus something to think about to ge people out of their blues, Rhode said. Rhodes said he writes his mus and his lyrics together. "I've got a stack of poems that I've never put music with," he said. He really began writing his own music one year and a half ago in Cape Cod before he came back to Asheville. Rhodes next engagement is in Clemson Oct. 24-26 and Charleston Nov. 3.
