the fact that VPI was unable to get

Paul Dietzel called the loss the
most frustrating he has suffered as
a collegiate coach.
The game started with a surprise
when Ron Bass started at quar

had missed most of last week's
practice with an injury, and
Dietzel decided Bass should make
his first start of the ear.

Bass led Carolina to its first
score on the second offensive
series, running the veer option well
with deft pitches to Tom Amrein
and Jay Lynn Hodgin. Randy
Chastain bulled in trom the one
yard line for the touchdown with
7:39 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Dietzel
decided to go with Grantz, injured
or not. Grantz let his backs do the
work on a seven-play, 39-yard
drive. With 6:25 left in the first
half, Carolina had its biggest lead
of the season. 14-0.

A defense that had held VPI to
136 first half yards was pushed
backwards for 306 more in the final
two periods. Carolina's fate was
decided when Tech stopped a
Gamecock drive on .the VPI 39 in
the las' quarter. At that point the
USC dciense was given the task of
trying to stop an offense that had
already scored 17 points and run
for more than 149 yards in the half.
It took 14 plays, none of them
passed, for the Gobblers to move
the neccesary 84 yards for the
touchdown to make th core 31-1.
