Teacher evaluatio Budgei BY LEE POWELL Of The Gamecock staff The student senate narrowly defeated an amendment which would have eliminated the SGA teacher evaluation project this year at its Wednesday night meeting. An amendment. to the recently passed SGA budget called for the Shealy to j threatened The sparks of a legal battle which could have occurred in the USC Student Senate were quieted Wednesday when Sen. Frank Shealy told the senate his threatened legal action would not take place. Shealy, Weaver,Greyson, and a few others had considered to take legal action against the senate after a Oct. 3 special session. The special session was held to approve the SGA budget, which the senate had not been able to do in two previous attempts. Shealy and Greyson said the budget as passed was incomplete, and that many senators voted "aye" merely to be done with it. The lawsuit, if pursued, would have been an attempt to nullify everything that occurred in the special session. Much debate surrounded the amendment. Henry Stilmack, secretary of Academic Affairs, explained the teacher evaluation project to the senate and noted that the project "will be a good one." He explained several problems wostpone legal action they sought a lawsuit. Shealy notified the senate of the results of his meeting with legal aid. He said after several days of legal assistance, he discovered that many senate rules and articles had been broken, as well as some of the rules in :"Robert's Rules of Order" Allen Lawhead, president of the senate, said that he was glad someone was keeping watch, and hopes that* those few would maintain their vigilance. He added that he hopes "People will keep an open mind.' A move was made to strike the controversy from the "minutes"--a record of what happens during senate sessions. He said last year's questions were "not nearly comprehensive enough" and were lacking in number. He said there will be 29 questions on the evaluation this year as compared to nine last year. Stilmack was asked if all professors had been contacted yet. He replied that his staff was now in the process, and said he felt a 75 per cent -turn-out of professors would be a good percentage. There are 1,200 professors on campus. Stilmack said the final report will be sold to anyone who wants one for about 50 to 75 cents. He said the charge is to help defray the costs of the project. About 4,000 reports will be printed and will be available about Jan. 1, being before spring registration. A senator mentioned that this project will not help all the students who ore-register.
