Most of last year's 48-8, nationally-ranked team, is back and so the Gamecocks might just make it all the way to the College World Series this season-an effort that was sidetracked last year by powerful Miami university. But, judging from the Jets series results those ab sentees won't be felt too harshly and the replacements could well prove to be superior. The transfers from junior college played well and Richardson's practice last year of emptying his bench, while it may have driven scorekeepers insane, apparently helped get some youngsters ready to assume key roles in the Gamecock baseball plan. So, if the recent series was any indication, Carolina fans can again look for the baseball team, and not the basketball squad, to be the nation's top-ranked representative from USC. Rosier, USC's leading scorer, fired in two goals in the first half to put Carolina up, $4, and added another in the second period. Gamecocks Face Tech From Page 11 The one common opponent, Houston, crushed Tech 49-12, while the Cougars had to mount a fourth quarter comeback to down USC, 24-14. Kentucky thumped the Gobblers, 38-7. Although Tech's record is the same as it was last time they met the Gamecocks, the appearance of the football team has changed somewhat. New head coach Jimmy Sharpe, who replaced last year's 2-9 leader Charlie Coffey, brought with him a new look on both offense and defense. The Gobblers altered their of fensive attack from the pro set to the wishbone-a formation which Paul Dietzel thinks might cause difficulties for the Gamecocks, especially in light of the fact that Georgia Tech wishboned to 487 yards on the ground against Carolina. The best runner of Tech's trio of running backs is Phil Rogers, who scampered for 1,036 yards last year. The quarterback is Greg Mullinax, a junior who attempted just five passes last year. But Bruce Arians, who has a good throwing arm, could see con sidraleplaying time. The wishbone formation allaws for just one wide receiver but Tech has an excellent one in Ricky Scales, perhaps the team's only bonafide All-America can didate. Scales hold most of Tech's receiving records. Carolina finally got its,offense untracked against Houston, although the Gamecocks managed just l4 points. They will go with the same attacking lineup this week. Defensively, Hayden Duncan will start at end and Hugh Bell will be a starting safety. Steve Courson will also be available for game activity, returning fromn an injnry.
