Are my words really that meaningless? Can it be that the rage of indignation over the Contemporary University (CU) debacle was wholly misun derstood? The military And its purpose TO THE EDITOR: I would like to comment on Mr. Osbourne's letter in the Sept. 30 issue of The Gamecock. Mr. Osbourne's statement "the function of the military is to kill people..." shows a rather narrow-minded perception of the situation. The military's purpose is to maintain a viable defnese for our country and a balance of power with other nations. The purpose of the ROTC program is to elicit the skills of those "people with an higher education," Mr. Osbourne refers to, who have "better solutions to human problems" to find peaceful ways of fulfilling the military's objectives without killing people.
