OCTOBER 3, 1974 I o study women's Athletic C4 BY ROBERT ATCHISON Gamecock Staff Writer A subcommittee was appointed and charged to draft recom mendations to align the wording and spirit of a proposed -federal regulation with the nims of the USC Athletic Department, at a meeting of the faculty athletic committee Tuesday. Regulations proposed by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare under the auspices of Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments, would not allow sex discrimination in education programs or activities that receive federal funding. The faculty committee ex pressed a general agreement with the equality goals set by the proposed HEW regulations, but feared specific wording of some of the guidelines. Concern was also expressed that the equality provisions in Title IX were unrealistic " to the actual levels of -development and par ticipation of men's and women's athletics on campus. Hagan also said the athletic department planned to challenge the applicability of Title IX to the USC athletic department due to a clause in the HEW guidelines exempting sports programs not receiving federal funds. The athletic department supports it self, has its own budget, and it is not a part of the educational organization of USC, he said. USC Athletic Director Paul F.
