None of them see these young
professors as a group of
"troublemakers." It is true the
group forced. out generally
disagreed with the administration.
But, Reiser said, "there was no
unusual amount of quarrelling for
dissent." They all, Reiser said,.
"without exception, had an interest
in the law school."
Few people know the precise
reasons for the tenure decisions.
But not all are curious. This is not
a-situation, said Haynsworth,
where "everybody should know the
whole story."
There is a system set up to. deal
with such matters, continued
Haynsworth, and "we ought to
work within the system. I do not
oppose the present system."
Haynsworth was given tenure this
year.
"The administration," said Gene
Lawrimore, a second year law
student, "is perfectly capable of
handling things like that."
Lawrimore felt "the system they
have is adequate" and saw no
need for more student represen
tation.
Law students do not loom very
large in this controversy. Most of
them did not have enough in
formation to comment. Never
theless, students have played an
important, albeit a limited role.

There was strong student protest
when the tenure decisions were
first announced during the sum
mer. According to Jay Bender, a
third year law student, students
organized to discuss these
decisions. There were some
meetings with Foster. Members
of the law review, said Bender,
went to see USC President William
H. Patterson and indicated their
concern to him.
Apparently, Patterson was
impressed and formed an ad hoc
committee to investigate the
tenure decisions. It was on the
recommendation of this body the
tenure committee retracted its
decison on Sullivan and Zimmer.
At least one tenure committee
member was surprised and im
pressed by the vehemence of
student protest. As Bender said,
"the fact that an uproar was raised
brought attention to the fact that
all was not right in the law center."

According to Ward, in not
making their reasons public,
members of the tenure committee
were asking the law faculty and
students to have faith in their
decisions, to keep trust in their
judgement. But, said Ward, "trust
has to be earned." In this case,
Ward feels, "it was never earned
before it was asked."
NOTE: This analysis could not
have been written without the help
of several professors - fifteen, to
be exact - and certain students.
However, only two of these
professors were on the tenure
committee and, as such, could not
speak with complete candor. Since
only Foster and members of the
tenure committee have the full
facts, this is, an incomplete story.
