solicited and accounted by the

The project, as well as all
major USC construction, was
examined by Rempel's
committee and the ad
ministration was asked to
back off on construction until
alternative plans were
brought before the committee
before the present plan was
approved June 27.
The plan, a more modified
and informal version than the
first plan proposed by the
administration, calls for a
series of 12-foot wide walk
ways covering the areas of
major pedistrian traffic,
shrubbery around the Pickens
Street overpass and con
struction of a circular hub
area at the foot of the Pickens
bridge.
Construction on the present
project began in July. Con
struction work has gone fairly
smoothly since it began, Bass
said, with only one significant
problem--that of obtaining
enough brick. The con
struction company had to

said.
An extra walkway has
been added during con
struction that was not on the
approved plans--the walk
leading off the bridge heading
towards Sloan College. Also,
the plans the construction
fence behind McKissick will
come down when the job is
completed.
Bass said he is satisfied
with the progress of the work,
saying it seems to be coming
along very well. Most
students seem to be pleased
with the present look.
There is another problem
pertaining to the project, but it
is not a construction problem.
The circle used to join the
paths is for architectural
beauty. Students are sup
posed to walk on it to get to the
different paths. However,
when someone is late for
class, he or she might be
tempted to make a beeline
across the center of the circle.
This tends to wear down the
new. grass inside the circle,
Bass said.
