Three starters rep Dietzel's Shocks r Members of Carolina's football team reacted to the announcement of Coach Paul Dietzel's resignation with shock and sadness, three starting players indicated. "Everyone's really disap pointed," quarterback Jeff Grantz' AMIREIN ..."try harder." said Sunday afternoon. Right halfback Tom Amrein made similar remarks on Saturday night. "It upsets everybody. We all like Coach Dietzel a lot and respect him very much." Bill Cregar, a senior right middle linebacker, echoed the two of fensive players' views. "Of course it hurts everybody," Cregar said. The Gamecock squad was first informed of the decision by Dietzel in the Carolina lockerroom after the team's 20-14 upset loss to Duke University. Most members of the team merely sat in front of their lockers for the next several minutes, with little or no con versation throughout the dressing room. Just moments before Dietzel made the announcement in the lockerroom the team and coaching staff had been booed by many fans and pelted with ice by others as the team moved from the playing field to the lockerroom. "I hated to see Coach Dietzel get blamed so much for our mistakes. The whole team hates it,"Amrein said. "He's a good coach and a victim of circumstances," Grantz said, "He receives unfair criticism from everybody. He does a good job in coaching but gets blamed when we (the players) don't do as we are coached to do. "I guess you have to put up with that to a certain extent in coaching," Grantz said, "but it's certainly overdone around here. I don't see why people pick on him when it's the team's fault." Amrein said public criticism of Dietzel upsets the players. "That's what the guys (team members) talk about when we lose, not the game itself." Amrein said. Cregar displayed a degree of bitterness toware those who have been critical of Dietzel. "I'm sick and tired of people who make posters and bumper stickers. They better not let me see them do it," Cregar said. While Grantz is not sure of the effect the announcement will have on the team, Amrein doubts if it will hurt the squad. "If anything, it will bring us up more. If this is going to be Coach Deitzel's last year we'll win for him. We hate to see him leave, so we'll make his last year a good one. We'll try hard to put out extra for him," Amrein said.
