Freshme For open4 By MARK LEARY Gamecock Staff Writer With eight of 26 scholarship freshmen' moved to the varsity team already, the junior varsity is nonetheless getting ready for its season, which opens at Georgia Tech Sept. 27. The junior varsity program is unique in that the players first importance is to the varsity team. "You don't know who' will be playing with you from week to week," USC JV coach Oree Banks says. Already eight of the 26 freshmen recruits have been moved up to the varsity. They are Philip Logan, John Green, Jerome Provenee, THE GANT ATl TO $ 1 DONTW OENF1Y' TII~ n plug JV I er with Jac Stan James, Kenneth Reese, Ricky Payne, Roger Woolbright and Britt Parrish. The biggest challenge of the JV team is to develop the inex perienced players. Banks said, "A lot of these kids are just green and all they need is the game ex perience to be on thier way. This Is* one of our major objectives with our -.Your- game schedual." The junior varsity program is also helpful for the athlete who is not ready to handle the transition from high school to college.
