Robinsoi Likes to. When one thinks of Georgia Tech receivers, senior Jimmy Robinson is the first name that comes to mindt At 158 pounds Robinson in timidated defensive backs with his size, someone said once in semi jest. "He has the best con centration on the ball I have ever seen," says Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Dave Fagg. Robby, as he is called by teammates, holds the Tech record for the most touchdown passes caught in a season with nine and has the best season reception average in the schools history, 17.6 yards per catch. In two seasons Robinson has caught 82 passes for 11 touchdowns and more than 1,400 yards. He is closing in on several other Tech records: "I think that the wishbone will make me more effective," Robinson relates. "It should give me a chance to be open on more long routes since the defense has to worry about the run first. And I like to catch those long bombs." Robinson caught two passes in the first quarter against Notre Dame, including a touchdown pass whichputTech in front of the Irish 7 0. However, Robinson was shut out the rest of the game and ended with just the two catches for 20 yard# total. In Tech's intersquad spring game last year, Robinson caught four passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. And, according to Tech officials, "he was open at least six to eight other times when the quarterback failed to get the ball to him." His touchdown catch last week against Notre Dame was a diving grab toward the right side of the end zone. Last year, when Tech opened against Carolina at Williams-Arice Stadium, the Gamecocks opened up a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and went on to win 41-28. However, just before the end of the first half, Robinson gave Tech a little bit of momentum when he caught a 44 USC's forte From Page 7 Tech's offense appeared as if it could achieve success during its debut against Notre Dame. After Rhino, a superb kick returner, raced 32 yards with the opening kickoff, the Yellow Jackets rambled down the field to a quick 7 0 lead on the payoff pass reception of All-America candidate Jimmy Robinson. Although Tech's offense is run oriented, Robinson makes the forward pass a legitimate threat of the Tech attack. Tech's backs are huge, bruising runners who could present a problem to Carolina's relatively young defense. Although Carolina does start a young defense, it returns-many of last year's starters making the sophomore-filled lineup more experienced than many of the nation's junior defenses. Carolina's forte still is not defense, as was the case for many years until last season. The coming of possible All-America ASMER'! Tech has two relatively inex perienced quarterbacks,. Allen and Danny Myers, both juniors. Myers is considered the starter, but was on the bench at the start of the Notre Dame game because of a sprained ankle, injured in pre season practice. However, Myers did play some against the Irish, and probably will start against Carolina. offense Grantz has made offense the strength of the Carolina attack. Last year, behind Grantz, who amassed 1,670 yards of total of fense despite missing two games plus most of another, the offense broke most of the school's team yardage and scoring marks. , The leading Gamecock runner is again Jay Lynn Hodgin, who netted 862 yards on the ground last year and nine touchdowns, and the depth at the running back positions is awesome. While the offensive line is some what inexperienced, there are some returning starters there. While Rhino's presence gives ,Tech the advantage in kick returns, Carolina has the ad vantage in place-kicking behind junior Bobby Marino, who hit nine of 12 field goal tries last year. Carolina and Tech have met each of the last four years, splitting the series, but Carolina took the last meeting, 41-28, when Grantz earned national honors for his excellent play from Sports Illustrated and United Press In ternation. -PARKER. .ESHOP larden & Blossom )N of ST PRICES in e Departmeni 991 99 * also carry a rplete lin, of rty mixers.
