USC reacts
Becky Turner said it wasn't fair
to grant Nixon amnesty. "It puts
Nixon above the law and sets a
double standard for the laws."
However Carol Perrin said
granting Nixon amnesty was the
only decent tWing Ford could do.
"Nixon's gone through enough."
She said the pardon was not setting
a double standard. "Everybody's
done it," she said, referring to
wiretapping and bugging. "They
should leave Nixon alone."
John Nelson repeated the
popular opinion that draft resisters
should be granted amnesty since
Nixon was. But Nelson said,
"Nixon really shouldn't have been
pardoned because he's a worse
criminal than the others." Nelson
said the quickness of Ford's
decision to pardon Nixon indicted a
deal was probably made before the
former President resigned. "It
was just one more of Nixon's
tricks," he said.

Roland Haynes, Jr. also wasn't
surprised by Ford's decision.
"Ford is just a honest Nixon,"
Haynes said. "I thought all along
he would grant Nixon amnesty."
Paynes disagreed with Ford's
decision because he said if we are
going to have principles, they
should apply to everyone.
Gary Heisel said he was sorry
Ford made his decision because
emphasis on Watergate was
decreasing, but Nixon's pardon
brought the subject back up in
people's minds.
Robert Ashley represented a
majority of opinion when he said he
didn't think Ford should have
granted Nixon amnesty, but
perhaps the decision will prove to
be best for the nation. "The
country Will' be free to settle other
problems now," said Ashley.
In a random sample conducted
by The Gamecock on Tuesday
afternoon, 16 people said they
opposed Ford's decision to grant
Nixon amnesty, while 5 people
supported Ford's pardon of Nixon.
