"The Univeristy of South
Carolina," said Dean Richard
Wertz, "is a really great place.
For an urban setting, this is a very
pretty campus."
Richard Wertz, dean for
Residence Life, has replaced
Elizabeth Clotworthy who retired
in July. Before coming to
Carolina, Wertz was the residential
life Director at the University of
Pennsylvani". He decided to come
to South Carolina "because there
are lot of possibilities for doing
things here. The University has a
lot of potential and is big enough
where one could begin to do more
thig.",
The new dean sees his job as
"basically centering on doing
things with Residence Halls." He
said he hoped to make dormitories
more than just a place for
"sleeping and hanging out."
Wertz is interested in a closer
relationship between academic
and residence life. Dormitories
should provide a "living-learning"
atmosphere, according to Wertz.

He said efforts would be made to
get professors involved in dor
mitory life. Part of this prograin is
under way in the Towers complex,
where classes are being taught
only to residents living in that
area.
Another future possibility, Wertz
said, is to have students with the
same special interests living
together. The Office of Residence
Life hopes to reserve some rooms
in each dorm to help such students
in getting together. These special
interests, Wertz said, could be

Wertz likes the idea of students
doing "House Projects." He said,
however, he does not expect every
student to be involved in such
programs. "Some people would
rather be left alone. That's fine
with us."
Since school started, Wertz has
visited all the dormitories to get
some feel of their physical
surroundings and facilities. Wertz
said he would try to keep in touch

to do this more often.
Wertz said he is aware students
are interested in longer visitation

The best he can do, he said, is to
