Caolina 72 PUT IT ALL TOGETHER Two Starters Turn USC Ten Carolina's tennis team, missing two graduated players from last year and two others who left school to turn professional, will begin fall practice Monday in preparation for the spring season which will find the team seeking its fourth straight 20-game season. Two of last year's top players, both freshmen from France, fled collegiate tennis during the summer to join the professional ranks. The two players who graduated, Brian Desatnik and Tom Craig, are not likely to be missed nearly as much as the two Frenchmen will be. They compiled 10-6 and 9-7 records, respectively, in a season which featured injuries for the former and a suspension for the latter. Despite the losses, Head Coach C - s 3 her eft. e. "Even though we lost those two (Paquet and Fritz) we still have four of our top six players back from a team that beat Cllemson at Clemson, and played well against powerful North Carolina and Florida State," Smarr said. In addition to the returning standout four-Andreas Hufschmid (28-6), Jeff Kefalos (26-7), Phil Dukes (16-6), and Mark Rosen blum (11-5)--USC has two other steady players who both went 7-2 last year. "We've got two boys coming in and we'll get one more during the semester," Smarr said of recruits expected to bolster the squad. "We've already signed two good players. One is Clyde Skaflestad from Mount Lakes, N.J. He's capable of playing three or four singles for us. He's a junior college transfer from Lakeland Junior College and he was one of the best junior college players in the country last year," .Smarr said, "And he's definitely a good doubles player." The other recruit is also from Mount Lakes, N.J. but he comes straight from high school onto the Gamecock courts. Jeff Hull was offered several scholarships from various schools according to Smarr. "He has excellent ground strokes and a great deal of potential," Smarr said of Hull. "We've got eight boys who can play tennis and hopefully we can bring in a boy capable of playing the number one spot midway through the year," Smarr said of his hopes for at least one more top recruit. -PARKER Ruggers Schedule First Meeting The Carolina Rugby Club will have an organizational meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Physical Education Center. All USC students or faculty members are eligible to play for the club and are urged to attend the meeting. Practices begin next week and the team's regular schedule starts in October.
