Changes By Scott Kearns, Associate Editor In every organization, industry, government agency, association and institution, there is a pool of stenographers usually called the public relations office. Public relations is responsible for informing the awaiting public of current events, personnel anniversaries, the latest checker, chess and bridge games, birthdays of Board members, and administrative changes. At USC this gang of renegades from the free press is called Informational Services. Informational Services, directed by Sig Huitt, ex-Gamecock editor turned salesman, matter of factly reported the recent administrative changes under new University President William H. Patterson. The change, involving six top ad ministrators, was effective July 15. "Sieg Heil" Huitt would like us to believe the change is just routine. Why else would he report it with such demonic candor? In a PR from "Sieg" dated July 10, all the bloody details of the purge are spelled out, but spelled wrong. "The appointments have been approved by the executive committee of the USC Board and the Board's special committee studying the possible reorganization of the administrative structure of the Univer sity." What "Sieg" should have spelled is "demanded," not approved." In Dr. Patterson's own words. . . "A president should serve at the will of the board." Things have certainly changed around here, and they haven't changed for the better. Consider if you will the recent controversy at the Law School. Four young lawyers had their careers jeoperdized by the will of a "bakers-dozen" old men. The Law School's Faculty Tenure Committee,(FTC) headed by Professor David Means,denied the professors tenure or retention. The criteria for tenure and retention are student evaluation, in-class team evaluation, and publication and research. However, one of the professors released received very high student evaluations. He has recently published in the "Carolina Law Review" and has ac cepted an invitation to publish in the "Columbia Law Review." His in-class team evaluation was given, but not in his field of expertise. He has, though, challenged the administration of Dean Foster and participated in activity promoting increased professorships for women at the Law School. But, according to Dean Foster, he wasn't released because of any "extra curricular" activities. No one is certain why any of the professors were released. Dean Foster and the FTC refuse to make that information public. Remember, there've been some changes made. And that change isn't stopping at the Law School or the University superstructure. Sources close to.the "Big House" indicate that Contemporary University is in choppy waters and Volunteer -services isn't the Rock of Gibraltar. Back to "Sieg's" PR... "Announcement of administrative changes within each of the six areas will be forthcoming from the vice presidents concerned, Dr. Patterson said." No, no, wait a minute, Dr. Patterson repeated something, he didn't say anything. After all, it took an attorney generals' ruling to allow the press into Board committee meetings. Dr. Patterson only repeated what the Board told him to say. Tust . like everyone else subservient to the Board. The Board is running the show. How else can you explain the recent decision to require parental consent by registered mail to live in Bates West Dorm. In case you didn't know it, Bates West is that multi-million dollar tenement sitting out in the middle of nowhere. It's for upperclassmen, juniors and seniors, and all of them are probably over 18. They have the right to vote, marry, qualify for military service and enter into legal contracts. But they can't reside in ,a building with "members of the opposite sex" without mommy's permission. You know as well as I do that no one person in their right mind would support a decision like that. But remember, there've been some changes made. The days of Tom Jones are gone. Community and success in in terpersonal relations, that which alleviates depression, does not occur in a setting that does not permit ongoing living and other than in the absence of persons with an unusual interest in the sexual lives of others, specifically students; however, that may be manifested, presented and rationalized. Encouragement and support of physically aggressive com petitive sports is the sanction and augmentation of the inability to relate with others and to engage in meaningful relationships. Military training is training in closed mindedness, ethnocen trism, nationalism and dogmatism in an international age. Private ownership of student book store does not "economically" permit a selection by students of books available nor the general availability of books on a- wide range of unpopular, hence, un profitable subject matters. It is not the function of a university to hold private property and to be concerned with the pursuit of profit. It is the function of the Legislature to support a university as consistent with a democracy. Education is the responsibility of faculty, students, and ad ministration, in that order. Education is consistent with mental health. Neither is it consistent with: Fascism, . Behaviorism, pseudo-morality and gross criminal ignorance. During the past years, I have not seen any letter to the editor in any paper on any suti ject from any faculty member or administrator of USC. But the major thrust is that education can take place only in a university run entirely by students who agree with your viewpoint. Letters Replyee's Reply To the Editor: I have survived on necessities in the face of others. living in luxury beyond their means and now an able to afford a few luxuries myself. Those living with luxuries, 3- 15 children, new luxury cars, however, were and are still getting free lunches in school, food stamps, and federally assisted programs for which I am forced to pay.
