A modified, informal version of
the Gibbes Green project was
unanimously approved . by the
Facilities and Grounds Com
mittee at a meeting on June 27.
University President, Dr.
William Patterson, was present
and gave the plan his support.
Plans for Gibbes Green as now
approved, include a series of 12
foot wide brick walkways
covering the areas of major
student traffic, a scheme to relieve
the austerity of the Pickens
Street concrete bridge with
shrubbery, and the construction
of a circular "hub" area at the

foot of the Pickens bridge to re
route pedestrian traffic across i
the Green, according to Richard r
Rempel, spokesman for the '
Facilities and Grounds Advisory
Committee.
"One of the main reasons why
we felt so strongly about the
informal plan was because of the
ideas and plans submitted by a
sophomore student, Edward
Ebert, which pre-disposed the
Committee toward the present
scheme," Rempel said. t
One of the crucial issues for the
Committee when it worked on
details of the Gibbes Green plan
was continuity- with the
traditional layout of the
Horseshoe, Rempel indicated.

Rempel ;aid it was necessary
o have 12 foot wide walkways in
