dination of Homecoming '74 is now
underway and there's alot to be
done. Any student interested in
working on the Homecoming

Effective Reading Class
The Communication Skills
Development Center is again' of
fering a class in Effective Reading.
This course is designed . to
significantly increase a student's
reading speed while allowing him
to maintain good t omprehension.
The class will begin on June 24th
in Room 213 at the Pendleton
Building. - It will meet for three
mt S weeks on Monday, Tuesday,
EnrueUsWednesday, and Thursday from
11:00 until 12 noon. The cost of the
course is $20.00. You may sign up

Linda Goldstein
Linda Goldstein, violinist, and a
Senior in Music at USC, will per

WUSC-FM is presenting a
festival of Orchestras evenings
through June 30. Featured will be
the great orchestras from the
United States and Europe such as
the London Symphony Orchestra,
which will be heard June 17, at 8
p.m., and the Philharmonic Or
chestra scheduled for Tuesday,
June 18, at 8 p.m.
Michael Leonhardt
The University Union Cultural
Series will present pianist Michael
Leonhardt Tuesday, June 18, at 8
p.m. in the Russell House Golden
Spur.
Leonhardt, a classically trained
pianist, will perform an array of
musical styles using an electric
piano, harpsichord and organ.

ordinary human beings like

GAMECOCK: Why did President
Jones resign?
Mungo: Oh, lots of reasons. And
this is the only comment I will have
about it. Tom Jones is a very good
friend and I am sorry that he
resigned. I think that it is probably
the most tragic thing that has
happened to the University in its
history. I think that he has been
responsible for more growth and
progress and more things good to

USC Day Camp Phogram
The University Union will
sponsor a day camp program at
the USC Bell Camp Recreation
Facility this summer for children
of currently enrolled students and
for children of faculty, staff or
alumni participating in the annual
Bell Camp Membership Program.
Four two-week sessions
beginning June 17, July 8, July 22,
and August 6 will be offered for
children 6-12 years old. The
sessions will run Mondays through
Fridays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. with
activities including swimming,
canoeing, archery, crafts and
athletic games. Cost per child is
$20 per session.
Ragtime Sounds
The ragtime sounds of the "Ruby
Red's Warehouse Band" will be in
the Golden Spur tonight and
Thursday night at 8 p.m. The
"Reds" are from Atlanta, where
they perform at their own night
club in historic Underground
Atlanta.
The "Ruby Red's" claim to be
"the world's finest banjo band".
They have played for almost every
occasion including Bar Mitzvahs,
beer busts, policical campaigns,
and ship launchings.
You won't be able to keep from
clapping your hands and stomping
your feet to the frantic beat of
ragtime. This is a University
happen to the University than all
of the other presidents put
together.
Tom Jones resigned because, as
he told me, "Friends come and go,
but enemies accumulate". I think
that simply states it. He is a bril -
liant man.
GAMECOCK: When were you first
aware that Jones was resigning?
Mungo: When I was re-elected
against all the opposition of all the
leadership of the General
Assembly, specifically, Sol Blatt,
who in nominating me intimated
that I went on campus and created
the riots of 1970, when in fact I was
there to quiet them.
Anyway, I went to see Tom Jones
to ask him not to interpret my re
election vote as a vote of con
fidence. I just went over to talk to
him. You have to understand the
nature of a political job. The

Lexicographer to Speak
Robert W. Burchfield, Editor,
Oxford English Dictionary Sup
plement, will give a public lecture,
"THE OXFORD ENGLISH
DICTIONARY IN 1974", at 8 p.m.
Wednesday, June 26 in the Law
School Auditorium, University of
South Carolina. The lecture is
sponsored by the Department of
English.
Summer Band Concerts
The University of South Carolina
Summer Band will present two
informal public outdoor concerts
next week.
Tuesday (June 18) the 60
member group will play on the
Sumter Street side of the State
House lawn at 6:30 p.m. Thursday
(June 20) a similar program of
light music will be presented on the
Russell House patio on campus at
3:30 p.m.
The summer Band is composed
of University graduate and un
dergraduate students, high sehool
students and local band directors.
Others in the community in
terested in playing with the group
should call O'Neal at 777-4278 for
further details.
Numbers on the program for the
Tuesday and Thursday concerts
include "El Capitan" by Sousa,
"My Fair Lady" by Lowe-Bennett
and "Block M. Concert March" by
Bilik.

is only.3 years. Tom Jones stayed
almost 11 years. That is rather
remarkable in a political position.
I think he felt that by being an
outspoken, honest man, he had
made enough people in politics
angry and rubbed them the wrong
way. But then, honest men do that.
I rub alot of people the wrong
way and I always will, because
that is what honest men do. I think
Tom Jones felt he had, in his honest
pursuit as a real educator, created
political enemies to the point that
he thought it was best to resign,
because it would be no longer in his
interest or the University's interest
to have the position.
GAMECOCK: I read before that
you did not approve of a politician
serving as President, but in effect
you are saying that the position
creates a politician.
