Humanities'
Cafe Opens
For Summer
The outdoor cafe in front of the
Humanities Office Building has
reopened for the summer with new
hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
(Monday through Friday).
In addition to cokes, tabs, coffee,
donuts, danish pastries, and
cookies, a variety of sandwiches
will be available every day while
they last.
According to the manager,
Claude Tisdale, the cafe will close
earlier than 4 p.m. if business falls
off.

I ran into a friend of mine the
other day as I was coming out the
side door of the new B.A. building.
Sitting cross-legged on the grass,
he was staring up at the building as
if spell-bound.
"Hey, how's it goin'?" I asked.
"Hi, I was just admiring this far
out building. It's beautiful."
"Beautiful! What the hell have
you been smoking?"
"No, I'm serious, it makes really
nice geometric patterns, and the
way the light hits it, and its tex
ture, man it's a work of art!"
I personally think the B.A.
building is a pile of garbage so I
decided to argue the point. "But
they didn't finish it off," I said. "I
know there's a way of covering up
those lines where the pre-fab
blocks fit together and those holes,
some sort of spray-on concrete or
something."
"It's cheaper not to," my friend
said, "besides this way it'll be easy
to take apart."
"Take apart, why would they
want to take it apart," I asked,
astonished.
"I don't know," he said,
shrugging his shoulders. "Maybe
they'll want to sell it some day so
Frank McGuire can have more.
money for his hockey team."
"It's basketball," I corrected.
"Oh yeah, right."
I decided to try a different ap
proach. I wanted to convince my
friend that the B.A. building wasn't
as beautiful as he thought. "What

building," I said. "All that wasted
space, half the building is con
sumed by stairways and elevators,
and if there is ever a fire those
stairways will be the first places to
fill up with smoke, and the air
conditioning system doesn't work
right, it's always too cold in there
and the walls are so rough if you
ever got pushed up against one
you'd really get hurt ard . .."
"Really hurt." my friend said,
"those are just a few bugs; they'll
be worked out in time. What's
really important is its aesthetic
value, the patterns it makes, the
way the light hits it; but most of all
it offers a pretty facade so the
University can lure more jocks
here, a spacious library so the
Freddie Frats have a nice place to
sleep during the day, and it gives
the Professors cheerful offices to
write dreary papers and prepare
dull lectures in."
Well I couldn't argue with that,
could I? After all, he said he was
serious. "Listen," I said, "what dc
you think about this Gibbes Green
thing?"
