Carolina's tennis team won its
next to last match of the regular y
season Wednesday, a convincing 9- y

The Gamecocks carry a 24-9 v
record into their final match (
against Jacksonville Thurdsay at t
2:15 at Maxcy Gregg.
Although 24-9 is a good record by d
most standards, this is the "worst" t
season in Coach Ron Smarr's -
career. Smarr, who won two t

Considering the injuries, the

ear's team, I think we did well,"
marr said. "The only time we
eere beaten badly was against
reorgia and they're ranked fifth in
he nation.
"We would have liked to have
one better, but we played a very
)ugh schedule. Our record for the
ast three years is 72-16, so I feel
hat our program is on the way
ip," said Smarr.

was to plague them the entire
season struck in the following meet
with Presbyterian. USC's top
player, Frenchman Bernard Fritz,
hurt his back against the Blue Hose
that day and appeared in only 19
matches all year.
Senior Brian Desatnik later
reinjured a groin injury he suf

only 15 matches. All this, along
with the suspension of Tom Craig
after the Harvard meet, forced
Smarr to play his reserves more
than he would have liked.

USC's domination of field
events enabled the Gamecocks to
slip past Baptist College 74-71
Tuesday afternoon in Charleston.
The USC victory snapped the
Buccaneers's home-win streak at 24
meets, which dated back to 1970.
Baptist's edge in the track events
was wiped out by the Gamecock's
decisive 34-19 score in the field
events, and the close meet, which
never had more than a ten-point
lead for either team, went to
Carolina.

that's just part of the game," said
Smarr.
"Some of our players did real
-well, like Andreas Hufschmid, Jeff
Kefalos, Phil Dudes, Steve Geller,
Mark Reosenblum, and Jerry
LeGrand, but the inexperience
hurt."
Another sore spot for Carolina
was the erratic play of doubles
teams, and injuries caused most of
the difficulties in this area, too.
"With all the injuries we had to
switch the teams around too much.

The meet was tied twice, with the
second tie, a 52-all score, being

13th event in the 17 event meet, was

Baptist's track domination

. Smarr has yet to make a decision
on whether or not he will take his
team to the NCAA Championships
in Los Angeles this year. He ex
pects to make that decision on May
1. "I think we could score points in
the nationals," Smarr said. In
fact, we could probably hold our
own against any team ranked under

decide to go or not. It's a long trip

Carolina's Adams jumped 6-6 in

Pat Fleming jumped the same

The Gamecock's 70-61 lead

Jim Schaper finished first in two
