"Bobby Richardson has his
baseball machine in gear," Chal
Port, coach of The Citadel, said
after his team lost to Carolina last
Thursday night at the Roost.
It is important that Port was
impressed with USC because as
chairman of District 3's playoff
selection committee, he will have a
direct say in whether or not the
Gamecocks are given a bid to play
in the NCAA playoffs in May.

"I think their (UDC's) three
game series with Georgia Southern
will be very critical and the results
should have a lot of bearing on any
decision made by the committee,"
Port said.
Carolina meets Southern this
Friday and Saturday at the Roost.
Earlier in the season Southern beat
the Gamecocks twice in Georgia.

"What we do is actually pick five
teams,"Port said. "We start with
our first choice and call them to see
if they will accept an invitation.
We have never beeen turned down
by a school."
Thus, it appears as though the
fourth and fifth committee choices
have little chance of getting a bid.
According to Port, the com
mittee evaluates the team on three
central criteria: the team record,
their schedule's difficulty and their
pitching depth.
Buck Thompson hurled the discus
159 feet and Tom Chgpman won the
javelin event with a throw of 209-4
to add to the Gamecocks' in
dividual victories.
Milton Reid won the 440 with a
time of 47.8 and Mike Sheley won
the half-mile with a time of 1:51.1.
