West Aide: No Comment On Story Governor West's office brusquely offered "no com ment" on The Gamecock story April 18 suggesting that West had foreknowledge of efforts to have USC President Thomas F. Jones removed from office. Phil Grose, one of West's administrative aides, refused to comment on the story when The Gamecock would not reveal to him the identity of a member of the USC Board of Trustees who spoke with West coucerning the matter on Jan. 21. West himself was unavailable for comment, as he is out of the country for the remainder of the week. Likewise, Jones is attending an educator's conference in Andover, Mass., and was also unavailable. The April .18 story stated that one USC trustee went to West on Jan. 21 and told the governor that unless Jones was made aware of activities against him, the trustee would "make the story known to the public." Controversy arises, however, in view of the fact that West, in a Feb. 5 press conference at Carolina Coliseum denied any foreknowledge of the resignation. Board s West [Y FOWLER John C. In response to the proposal, the. Board passed a resolution definitely in opposition to the school. "The board has accepted the role to bring the Medical University of South Carolina Jo its yet unattained potential and to attain a standard of excellence for the medical university. In consideration of this charge and the fact that we have this goal in sight it goes on record as opposing the establishment of a second medical school at this time under any circumstances," the board's resolution stated. Board members added they encourage a liason between USC and MUSC," to more accurately establish statistics as to present and project accomplishments in meeting the needs of health per sonnel of the state and the requisite financial support to attain these ends." The MUSC Board was ap parently disturbed by the seeming secretiveness of the Governor's presentation and collection of figures. Their major objection was to the secrecy in announcing Veteran's Administration funding for the school. "One problem with this entire thing has been the secrecy with which this has all come about," said Board member Dr. J. W. Schofield of Florence. "The first information we had was a few days before you (West) made your speech announcing the VA funds." He added, "The whole time the gigures were being developed, the Medical University didn't know anything about it." After having his proposal decidedly defeated with no second, West expressed his desire for ani official statement from the Board concerning their stand on the construction of the new medical school. "I simply think that there ought to be a policy keeping this board from taking a position. The basic question is whether this board should take an official position j regarding the new school," West < said.
