In addition, the USC distance medley relay team finished fourth, but just three-tenths of a second behind winning Missouri. Carolina will continue its dual meet season Saturday night when they travel to Florida State, a team which they upset in Columbia last year. In Texas' capital of Austin, Carolina performed well in a meet which USC Coach Bill McClure called "a little NCAA cham pionship." "This is one of the most prestigious meets in the country," McClure said. "The best teams in the Big 8, Southwest, Missouri Valley and Western Athletic Conferences are always there. There were 42 teams in the University division alone, plus about the same number of teams in the college division. It's a huge meet." Saturday afternoon the two-mile relay team battled winning Kansas State in the fastest race so far this season in the nation. "No one in the nation had run under 7:30 outdoors this year and there were a number of teams that ran that on Saturday," McClure said. Carolina's second-place time was 7:24.7, behind K-State's 7:24.4. USC's time was a school record by 11 seconds. "I felt that we were ready to run that well," McClure said. "Jim Schaper was over his illness and we were ready." Schaper, who normally anchors the relay team, was put on the third leg by McClure for Satur day's race. "I thought we needed to get the guys up and by putting Schaper against some of the slower runners I thought we could open it up a little." As it turned out, Schaper got the baton behind the leaders but caught up to put Carolina even going into the final leg. USC's splits for the race were; Don Brown 1:50.9; Mike Sheley 1:52.0; Schaper 1:50.5; and John Brown--1:50.3. The time was a school record by 25 seconds. USC also had three people in individual events. Buck Thompson finished 10th in the discus with a throw of 168 feet and Tom Chap. man did not place in the javelin Freshman hurdler Bernie Aller made it to the finals in the 120-yarc high hurdles and was second unti: he hit the eighth hurdle and fell. Allen had run 13.9 and 14.1 in tria heats to qualify for the finals. Meanwhile, Carolina will hav( one of its toughest dual meets of the season Saturday night, ac cording to McClure. "We really shouldn't have beat Florida Stat( last year," McClure said. "They had the better team on paper but we just had some great per formances from our people." And McClure thinks this year's meet will be about the same. "It'l be about the same-type of meet,' McClure said. "They have the sprinters and we have the middle distance runners. The meet will probably depend on the field events." According to McClure, USC should have the advantage in the triple and high jumps and discus, but Florida State can even that out in other field events. "It's just going to depend on who's hot on Saturday," McClure said. "They're going. to be dedicating a new Chevron 440 track so they'll be up for the meet."
