Raymond Lavigne, gaining one
of his spot starts, held Georgia
Tech to just one run through five
innings to pace Carolina to a 4-1
victory in the second game of a
doubleheader sweep for the
Gamecocks Saturday afternoon at
the USC field.
Lavigne, the fourth starter in
USC's rotation which includes Earl
Bass, Greg Ward arid Tim Lewis,
picked up his fourth victory
against no losses in just his sixth
start.
USC followed the pitching of
Lewis and reliever Allen Johnson
to a 4-2 win in the first game.
Thursday night Carolina downed
Western Carolina, 8-1. The USC
season record is 30-5.
Carolina plays Stetson Monday
and Tuesday in a pair of 3 p.m.

Lavigne, as the fourth man in
Carolina's four man rotation, often
misses a pitching assignment if the
Gamecocks have a day off. But
when Lavigne has been given the
opportunity to pitch, he has been
masterful on the mound.
In 30 innings Lavigne has given
up just 14 hits and two earned runs.
The junior from Columbia has
struck out 26.
Lavigne attended Spartanburg
Junior College last year where he
was 7-3. He has never lost a game
for the Gamecocks.
"I have been trying him at other
positions," said USC Coach Bobby
Richardson, "so I don't feel too bad
about skipping him the past two
times in the rotation.
"He has an excellent curve ball
and the makings for a great pit
cher," said Richardson.
Lavigne has displayed a good bat
in the past, hitting .353 last year at
Spartanburrg and batting .300 in
the Central Carolina League,
where he also fashioned a perfect
6-0 pitching mark.
Lavigne was not the only pitcher
to do well for the Gamecocks
against Tech. Johnson pitched two
shutout innings of relief in both
games, helping Lewis to a 7-1
record and Lavigne to keep his
unblemished mark.
Against Western Carolina,
pitcher Bass also turned in an
excellent performance, striking
out 15 batters for a complete-game
win, elevating his record to 7-1.
In support of the Carolina pit
chers, USC jumped ahead in all
three games. Eddie Ford provided
a big bat against Western, scoring
the first run after singling in the
first inning and later scoring on his
second homerun of the year.
Carolina put six of. its eight runs
against Western on the board in the
seventh inning, with Ford's shot
driving in two.
Bass pitched four and two-thirds
perfect innings before giving up a
single to Don' Lasher in the fifth.
Lewis shut out the Yellow
Jackets for five innings before
giving up two runs in the sixth, but
the Gamecocks had already given
him three runs to work with by
then. Johnson came in and quelled
the uprising that Tech started
against Lewis in the sixth inning.
Johnson did the same for
Lavigne in the second game of the
twinbill, after the starter,had given
up a walk and a run-scormng double
in the fifth inning.
