USC Sprint Offensive Line Is Di Midway through Carolina's spring football practice the em phasis is on youth as the coaching staff looks over a group of youngsters in search of replacements for four starting offensive linemen lost through gradbation. Coach Paul Dietzel and his staff's first priority when spring drills opened was to find replacements for Darrell Austin at center, Rick Anthony at left guard, Dave Cash at right tackle, and Marty Woolbright at tight end. Mike McCabe, a strapping (6-5, 224) junior from Knoxville, who started several games at left guard last year when An thony was injured, is the most experienced offensive lineman available. He has been switched to center where he is presently working ahead of junior Dwight Efird, who lettered last year as a reserve. Senior Jerry Witherspoon, one of two starting linemen returning, presently is hampered by a bad ankle and Joe Smith, a junior non-letterman, is holding down the right guard spot. Witherspoon is expected to return to action before "Cockfight '74", the annual intra-squad game that will climax spring practice April 27. Brad Kline, a junior who lettered as a reserve last fall, is presently the starting left guard, backed up by Bruce Hoffman, a sophomore who earned a letter last fall as a freshman linebacker. Powers from the Southwestern, Southeastern and Big Eight Conferences will also be present at Texas Memorial Stadium for the two-day affair featuring some of the best collegiate track athletes in the country. Carolina track coach Bill Mc Clure will be taking his three relay teams - the two mile, distance medley and mile - , plus hurdler Bernie Allen and two field event participants, Tom Chapman in the javelin and Buck Thompson in the discus. "We'll be going up against some of the top athletes in the nation and to be realistic our two mile relay team has the best chance of our group to get a win," said McClure. "Bernie has the capabilities to get at least third in the high hurdles and I expect both Chapman and Thompson to turn in personal bests in their events." "The stiffest competition in the relays should come from Kansas State and Oklahoma State and also Texas. We could go out there and give our best performances of the season and have nothing to show for it." The two-mile relay team claimed a first place finish in the NCAA Indoor Championships last nnnth with a time of 7:27.1. Don Brown, a senior from Charlotte, N. C., will lead off for the Gamecocks, followed by junior Jim Schaper, junior Mike Sheley and sophomore John Brown. Sehaper, the Gamecocks' ace middle distance runner who has been below par recently due to a bladder infection, is expected to be at full strength for this weekend. The distance medley team will be comprised of Don Brown, running an 880; Milton Reid following with a 440; John Brown running a three-quarter mile; and Schaper anchoring with the mile. The mile relay team of Sheley, Paul McLeod, Keith Norvel and Reid has recorded a best time of 3:12.8 this season. Allen, a highly regarded freshman from Harrisburg, Pa., has run a 13.8 for the 120 yard high hurdles; Chap man has thrown the javelin 226-6 and Thompson's best toss in the discus has been 172-4. Trials and finals in the distance medley, javelin and discus will be Friday,while the finals in the two mile relay, mile relay and high hurdles will be Saturday. Texas Memorial Stadium is also the site of the NCAA Chamipon ships this season June 6-8.
