Garnet Ai
Expected
BY SID GR
The 1974 Garnet and Black is r
expected to arrive on campus April
22, according to Fred Merritt, I
editor of next year's volume. I
Merritt said the printer of the I
yearbook held up its arrival by an a
extra week due to a question over <
thevolume's new format.
According to Randy Newcome, v
editor for this year's volume, the
1974 Garnet and Black will have a
new format. "The new format is
what we think national
publications would print about USC
if they devoted an issue to the
campus," Newcome said.
Merritt said the format is a
series of "individual magazines
inserted into the cover, enabling
the student to remove whatever
section he wants." The magazines
chosen for adaptation to Carolina i
students and their activities are
Playboy, Ms. Carolinian, Sports
Illustrated, Saturday Evening I
Post, Saturday Review of Carolina 1
Arts, Southern Living, Intellectual
Digest, and the National Lampoon. I
"Articles will be placed in the
various magazines according to I
special interests," explains 1
Newcome. 1
Newcome said the idea started f
three years ago when she thought I
of the idea of a series of magazines
in a binder making up a yearbook.
Newcome admitted Texas Tech's I
la ventana has been using the
format since 1952, but she claims
she never heard of it before. t
Newcome hopes the format will be I
successful enough to warrant its 4
use in the future. I
The yearbook will contain 508 1
numbered pages, 36 cover pages, 4 t
insheet pages, and two pictorial
foldouts, according to Newcome.
Newcome said the foldouts will be
found in the Playboy and Ms.
Carolinian sections.
The outer cover of the 76th
volume of the Garnet and Black c
will appear conservative, using the
standard 9 by 12 inch dimensions. t
Merritt estimated the book as
being almost two inches thick. The
Garnet and Black will be printed i
on 80 lbs. of glossy enamel paper to l
help preserve it, according to
