There have been many great -
New York Yankee players. The
names of Joe DiMaggio and Babe
Ruth go back further into the
record books of professional
baseball than recent greats Whitey
Ford and Mickey Mantle.
However, the winning tradition
has been on the decline in recent
years.
But for Yankee center fielder
Bobby Murcer there is a legend to
be kept alive. He plays Mickey
Mantle's position.
"I may be the highest paid
Yankee, figure wise," said Murcer
Tuesday night at USC, "but I still
have a long way to go."
Murcer is 27 and says that being
young is his greatest asset."When

There are good reasons for
people comparing Murcer with
Mantle. Both are from the same
state, Oklahoma, and both are
sluggers. Mantle and Murcer both
played shortstop in high school.
The biggest comparison of all is
tlhat they were selected by the
same team to play professional
baseball. Otherwise the story
would not be quite the same.
Murcer came into the Yankee
organization in 1965, spending
several years in the minor leagues
before making the major league
team in 1970. He played one year
with Mantle, and calls it "the
greatest year I have spent in
baseball."
"I feel good about this coming
season," said Murcer. "We had a
good sprina training and with
it to third when the ball got by the
leftfielder. Gambrell scored on a
ground out by freshman third
baseman Jim Pankovits.

more. He doesn't consider himself
a slugger. "I just want to help this
team win a pennant," he com
mented.
Former Yankee catcher Elston
Howard is now the teams first
base coach. He has spent twenty
years in the Yankee organization.
He knows a side of Bobby Murcer
that few people know.
"Here was a kid who came along
and filled the shoes of Mickey
Mantly, and Mantle was a great
player," said Howard. "Bobby has
done an outstanding job and he
will get better as he gets older. He
has some great years left."
Murcer has another story. "I
really always wanted to be a
doctor," he said. "No kidding." In
the off-season he likes to fish and
hunt. He scores in the low 70's in
golf.
