am Defeats Furman
After dropping a match Monday
to Harvard, 6-3, in what Coach Ron
U L! GREAT! Smarr termed "our worst per
ws formance in three years", Carolina
fTAKING! bounced back to defeat Furman
Tuesday, 7-2, and raise the
H! A JOY! Gamecock season record to 18-6.
I"I think our showing against
ONATE " Furman was one of our better
efforts," Smarr said. "We played
much better than we did against
Harvard. To bounce back from the
Harvard match, which was very
bad, is pleasing."
Unlike the Harvard match, USC
displayed strong doubles play
against Furman and took all three
of the combined efforts. Fritz
Kefalos, Hufschmit-Paquet and
Duke-Steve Geller teamed for
straight set wins.
Fritz, Hufschmit, Kefalos and
Duke took wins in singles action,
while Paquet and Mark Rosenblum
suffered losses.
Furman's record fell to 17-8.
USC faces Georgia Tech in
Atlanta today.
"It's going to be a tough road
now," Smarr said after the
Furman match. "I was very
displeased with our play against
Harvard and now we have to play
the toughest part of our schedule
without two of our top players."
Brian Desatnik is also inactive
because of a pulled groin muscle.
