Admission is free to all University of South Carolina students and they may pick up tickets at the Drayton Hall box office from noon until 5 p.m. beginning today. Admission to all others is $1. If available, tickets also may be purchased at the door on performance nights. This production is the first thesis play at the university in several years. "At most other schools, thesis productions are not only not unusual but they are required; the last one here was about four years ago," Heck said. "The theater department here either doesn't have the money for them or doesn't want to give it. That's why we had to go through the Student Allocations Commission so the University Players could produce it. "We chose Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men because most who read it or the book consider it a literary classic--it doesn't rely on the element of social comment as so much Steinbeck does," Heck continued. Of Mice and Men was written in 1937 and won the Drama Critics Award as the best play of that year. To its credit it won the award over Thornton Wilder's Our Town which was Pulitzer Prize winner. Of Mice and Men has had great popular and critical aclaim. The Players hope, by doing this production, they will bring to the campus a more diverse theater experience. According to Heck, "People in these productions tend to be a small group of theater majors and grad students.For this production we've been fortunate in getting more people involved. For example, there are four freshmen in the cast of ten, and another four for whom this is their first time in a production." This is the University Players' first year as a functioning organization. This year they produced two bills of one-acts in which many people were involved. Next year they hope to produce two more bills of one-acts as well as two major plays and larger co sponsored dramatic events. The set for Of Mice and Men was conceived and designed by theater graduate student Don Watkins who "virtually built the set single handedly. Had I not had him to take care of that I don't know what I'd have done," Heck said. "He really deserves all the credit he can get." Included in the cast are Charles Inglett, Gary West, J.
