R "WELL ...LOOks L1 Strong Leader Or Truth? To the Editor: The United States is on the verge of a major constitutional con frontation between the President and those elements of Congress charged with the responsibility of investigating Watergate. Mr. Nixon says that he will furnish no more evidence unless subpoenaed, claiming that to submit to such Congressional pressure would weaken the Office of the Presidency. At this point in time, with a constitutional clash apparently ir their future, Americans should sit down and try to straighten out their national priorities.. The real questions at issue seem to be: I. what America wants and need. now a strong national leader? Or i. faith in Mr. Nixon so shaky that the complete truth about Watergate (and personal taxes) must b made public knowledge before thi people will consider giving hin their trust? In the light of the administrativ corruption that has already sur faced and continues to do so almos daily, I do not feel that Presiden Nixon can be the strong, effective faith-inspiring leader that he wouli like to be. Watergate will alway be an albatross around his neck a long as the people who elected hiri to the Presidency are not sure c his innocence or guilt. Fur thermore, whether the Presideri had prior knowledge of the breali in or not, he is still doomed t failure on this count. If he knew< the incident he is guilty of cor spiracy and lying, and if he did n< know of it he stands accused < being a poor administratoi ignorant of illegal activities goin on among the upper hierarchy: the party of which he is, sui posedly, the leader. And wheth( or ,not the missing and-or noi existent tapes and tape gaps ar legitimate they came at a tini when turning them over a evidence-on time, intact an unaltered-would have buttressE Presidential claires of innocene So, what does tonerica want? strong national lcn.der or the tri about the leader it already has. do not feel that I-resident Nix< can be the former without ti latter. The American people, who have en dured one crisis after another during the Nixon administration, just do not feel up to being dragged into .a political power struggle in which the President can only win if he proves his innocence anyway. The people gave Mr. Nixon his office, and they now want to see where his allegiance lies-with the fift or with the giver. Dennis Langley Vote, Don't Complain To the Editor: The subject of this letter is the recently concluded SGA elections and the apathy the students of USC showed toward them. Students seem to think that student government is a "farce" so they refuse to take ten minutes t of their precious time to survey the candidates, their issues, and their I platforms. The candidates who run spend their own time and money in an attempt to make Scollege a little easier for these ,people, therefore deserve a littel more consideration than the tmajority of students showed them. I personally met several people 0who claimed the student goyern ment did nothing for them. These 'will be the first people to complain Swhen mandatory fees go up, another parking lot gets taken away from us, or when housing gpulls another of their "rin-offs" - In conclusion, I would like to say r that a student government is only - as strong as the people who support e it, and of thes campus of 18,000 e students, more people showed up to S watch the streak than people who dshowed up at the polls.
