SGA Cutbacks Defe

A bill to reduce the percentage of
student activity fees allocated to
the student government executive
branch was defeated after much
bickering Monday.
The bill, introduced by Ed
r- Ewing, would have reduced the
present 11.38 per cent of student
activity fees received by the
executive branch to 9 per cent. A
compromise measure by William
Hubbard reducing the cut to 11 per
cent was passed instead.
Only 19 of 41 senators were
present for the special senate
session called specifically to
consider Ewings' bill. The meeting

Leigh Leventis, student
Government Association (SGA)
vice president, gave the chair to
Allen Lawhead temporarily in
order to argue against the bill. He
said such a cut in the budget was
unrealistic because of rising prices
and unwise considering the
projects scheduled for next year.
Leventis, SGA president-elect,
presented a projected $44,800
budget for next year. He em
phasized this budget did not in
clude some prospective cabinet
positions. This year's budget was
$45,000.

Student Allocations Commission
(SAC). Any cut in the executive
budget would go to the SAC for
distribution. Any financial
shortage encountered by the
executive branch could be
presented to the SAC, Ewing said.
SGA President Rita McKinney
said $6,000 would be left from the
current budget at the end of the
year.
Rodney Shealy named a number
of areas in the SGA !udget he
thought deserved examination. He
specifically referred to the travel

Hubbard said just leaving the
budget at the present level would
actually be a cut considering rising
