Greek We Massive Fund Raisi BY BILL OUTLAW Carolina fraternities and sororities will begin Greek Week festivities Tuesday with a com munity service project designed to collect money for the "Brothers and Sisters of Columbia," a volunteer organization formed to help underprivileged children. The festivities will include three projects designed to render financial assistance to the Brothers and Sisters. The projects include a door-to-door fund-raising campaign by the fraternities and sororities, a bi-cycle race and a marathon football game. The fund-raising campaign will have a fraternity and sorority covering a designated area in Colgmbia to try and raise as much money as possible. Business firms will also' be contacted for con tributions. The fraternity and sorority collecting the most money will be awarded a plaque as out standing fundraiser. The bicycle race, called the "Sigma Nu Little 500", is spon sored by the Sigma Nu Fraternity with all fraternities and sororities participating in a race Each entry pays a fee to race and a program is issued which had paid ad vertisements in it. The proceeds of this will go the Brothers and Sisters. The race will be held next Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Field "F". The football game will begin Sunday April 7 at 1 p.m. on one of the intramural fields by the l Physical Education Center. Volunteer participants are welcomed and contributions will be taken up while the football game is played. Fraternities and Sororities decided to dedicate their fund raising projects to the Brothers and Sisters after being told of the State Legish Capitol Pun A 32-hour session of the South Carolina House of Representatives ended Friday, March 15, with the reinstatement of capital punish ment by a 72 to 12 margin. Normand founded the organization in August of 1969 when he was a graduate student at USC. Normand said the organization depends entirley upon the volun teer staff and individual con tributions to exist. He said the organization is counting on the Greek Week projects to get it back on its feet again financially. Brothers and Sisters has 340 volunteer workers, most of which are university students and these workers organize group meetings and spend time with 560 un derprivileged children, according to Normand. Brothers and Sisters has organized its own boy and girl scout troups; cooking, dancing and sewing groups for girls and drama groups for everyone. Normand said the emphasis is on giving the underprivileded children something constructive to do and to get to them before they become involved in juvenile delinquency. Normand said the main dif rerence in this organization and the Big Brothers of America is Brothers and Sisters is a preventive. volunteer program lesigned to prevent problems rather than cure them.
