Like a great number ot USC
students, the Carolina men's tennis
team spent much of the Spring
Break in Florida, but the
Gamecocks were not there on
vacation. Coach Ron Smarr's
team defeated Jacksonville 8-1 and
placed 2nd in the Gator Classic in
Gainesville, beating Southern
Illinois and Florida International
before losing the championship to
the University of Florida. USC
also took victories in meets with
Dartmouth and Ohio University

Smarr was pleased with the play
of his team, although he felt that
tdb many of the close matches
were being lost. "I thought we
played real well on the trip, but I
wish we would start winning some
of these three-set matches so we
could win the close meets. We've
had some very close 6-3 and 7-2
losses. In the match against
Florida, which is a nationally
ranked team, we could easily have
won five singles matches against
them. We had five matches that
went three sets and we only won
two."

In one of those close matches,
Carolina's number one player,
Bernard Fritz. lost his first mat'h
of the season when he was forced to
default from his match with
Florida's Juan Diaz with the score
tied 6-3, 5-7, 2-2. A foot injury,.
one of the many maladies to strike
the freshman star this year, along
with exhaustion forced Fritz from

"We've got the toughest part of

final portion of their season with I
