The Carolina baseball team
raised its record to 8-0 with two
wins over Virginia and one over
Richmond last week as good pit
ching, timely hitting and a strong
defense helped the Gamecocks
remain undefeated.
According to Coach Bobby
Richardson, depth and versatility
will continue to help the team.
"Eddie Ford reinjured his foot in
Thursday's eame," said
Richardson, "but our depth
allowed us to fill right in. Larry
Wojcicki came in to play second
and Jeff Grantz moved to short.
Jim Pankovits has also been a
strong addition to our infield."
Saturday the Gamecocks won
their eighth straight game,
defeating Richmond 2-0. Raymond
Lavinge collected the win and Mike
Cromer got the save. Carolina was
outhit fiveto two, but scored twice:
in the first and had another good
defensive effort.

The 2-0 over Virginia on Thur
sday was highlighted by a strong
pitching performance from Greg
Ward. Ward struck out 16 and
faced only thirty batters en route to
his second win of the season. It
was the first complete game for
the Carolina pitching staff this
season.
The first 23 Virginia batters
were retired in order until a
Cavalier reached on an infield hit
in the eighth inning. Virginia got
two more hits in the ninth , but
Ward held on in 90-degree weather
for a 2-0 victory.
In Friday's game, Virginia
jumped off to a one run lead in the
top of the first. Carolina bounced
back to tie the game in the bottom
of the inning and put the game
away in the sixth when Hank Small
and Drew Choate combined for
three RBT. Tim Lewis, with relief
help from Allen Johnson, recorded
his second win of the year. The
final score was 6-3.
