CaroliE In Chai BY WAYNE PHILLIPS Sports Writer Riding a first place finish in the two-mile relay, Carolina captured third place in the team standings of the NCAA Indoor Track Cham pionship Friday and Saturday in Detroit. "To finish third in the nationals is a tremendous achievement," USC Coach Bill McClure said Sunday. "Look at the teams we beat, track powers like Southern California, Villanova and UCLA. "Before the meet we didn't have much aspiration or hope about doing as well as we did," McClure said. "To be able to be third in the nation is tremendous." The two-mile relay team of Don Brown, Rebus Sheley, John Brown and Jim Schaper won its race with a time of 7:27.1, four-tenths of a second faster than second place finisher -Oklahoma State and just two seconds slower than the indoor world record. "No, we were not surprised at all that we won the relay," McClure said. "We thought we could win it if nothing unexpected happened to us. We thought we were as good as anyone else there." The splits for USC were Don Brown 1:53.7; Sheley 1:51.2; John Brown 1:51.5; and Schaper 1:50.7. Reggie Clark of William & Mary won the race in 1:52.2 and all the sixth place time in the race was 1:52.8. McClure said Schaper nearly fell down after tripping on the first turn of the race. "He had a good race just to finish second because when he tripped he got further behind at the beginning of the race than he would have liked," Mc Clure said. Despite the other top USC per formances, McClure was most enthused about a fourth place finish by freshman Bernie Allen in the 60-yard high hurdles. Allen's 7.2 time in the finals was two-tenths of a second behind the winner Danny Smith of Florida State and one-hundredth of a second in back of third place finisher Vance Roland of Kansas State. "Bernie's making the final and placing fourth was the best sur prise we had all weekend," Mc Clure said. "He ran four races in the meet and ran 7.2 in three of them and 7.4 in the other. There is no question that he will be one of the best in the world before he is through. Of course this won't come overnight, but if he keeps working hard he can becomeone of the best in the world."
