Future plans fot the restoration
of USC's historic "Horseshoe"
region were discussed Friday by
Harold Brunton, vice president for
business affairs.
The restoration will return the
entire area to the original style of
the 1850's in architecture of the
buildings as well as landscaping of
the grounds surrounding this 19th
century period.
The South Carolina State
Legislature has granted $2.8
million for this project but Brunton
foresees an eventual increase in
this allocation by 1976, the
Bicentennial year and hopefully
the year of the Horseshoe's
completion. The Horseshoe will
continue to be a useful area of
campus with its library and
living space for 200 students. The
students will have individual, air
conditioned apartments rented to
them in this future "peaceful,
relaxing section of campus."
All of the buildings within the

Horseshoe except for the
President's home, are the original
structures of the 1860's period. The
architecture of Longstreet Theatre
will be modified so that the en
trance faces the Undergraduate
library and is only five feet above
ground level.
Longstreet Theatre's ar
chitecture presently imitates the
style of the Charleston Confederate
Museum which in turn imitates
English architecture of the 1600's.
Richard Wright, architect of the
Horseshoe, intends to be as true to
the period as possible, including in
his efforts the cloistered effect i
which prevailed during the original i
1800's mood. Accompanying the
architect's approach will be the
effort of Landscapist R. Webel.
Webel intends to attempt to imitate
the style of shrubbery and abun
dant green grass which would have
existed had the original land
scapist not run out of funds in the
1860's.
