Carolina enjoyed its best of
fensive game this year as it won its
21st game against only four losses
as the Gamecocks trounced
Houston 104-86 Saturday at the
Coliseum.
Led by Alex English and Nate
Davis, who both had career h?ghs
of 37 and 21 points, respectively,
Carolina had five men in double
figures. Brian Winters, 18, Mike
Dunleavy, 12, and Bob Mathias, 10,
added to the team's point total.
The game was close until 3:16
was left in the first half when
Carolina started .a streak of
baskets. USC outscored Houston
12-1 for the remaining time in the
first half.
"That bad spell in the last three
minutes of the first half just killed
us," Houston coach Guy Lewis
said. "They have at least three
great shooters. Dunleavy, English
and Winters are all great shooters
and Davis was a fine player, at
least today."
Lewis said USC's scoring spree
hurt Houston's offense as well as
its defense. "Our offense is what
killed us in the first half," Lewis
said. "They got those quick
baskets and that caused us to be
impatient on offense. Our offense

Coach Frank McGuire was
specially pleased with the win.
'This showed the desire this team
ias, just look at those jumpballs,
ur boys outjumped their taller
nen."
Of the last three minutes of the
irst half McGuire said, "We were
,etting position on their men under
he boards. Greiner blocks out just
reat, and if Davis gets that
)osition nobody can out-rebound
iim."
Freshman Davis played 20
ninutes and, in addition to scoring,
also collected seven rebounds and
locked one shot.
Against a much taller team the
3ainecocks showed their desire in
another way, they blocked nine.
Although he did not score his
average, Winters showed his all
around ability as he blocked three
shots.
Houston's high scorer was Louis
Dunbar with 20 followed by Fresh
man Otis Birdsong with 19.
Despite leading Houston in
scoring, Dunbar was disappointed
in his play. "I missed a lot of shots
I feel I could have made," Dunbar,
a 6-9 forward-guard, said. "I could
have done more to contribute."

McGuire said Davis, who has
become the favorite of the
Coliseum crowd, could be an even
better rebounder than he is.
McGuire said, "Nate played with
his back to the basket in high
school, and he follows the ball
when it's shot. If he would get
position first, nobody would out
rebound him."
The Gamecocks shot 55 per cent
from the floor to 41 per cent for
the Cougars.
Carolina
Rips Pitt
For 20th
BY GARY WEST
Sports Writer
Carolina's 67-50 thumping of Pitt
Wednesday night gave USC its 20th
win for the sixth straight season, a
feat which seemed almost im
possible at the start of the season.
With only one senior starting
with four sophomores, and
sometimes a freshmaai , the
Gamecocks have blitzed through a
national schedule reaching a 21-4
record, including the Houston win.
Coach Frank McGuire had
praise for his players and their
zone defense, which has saved a lot
of games for them this year, after
the Pitt game.
"Our zone was the winning
cause," said McGuire. "The
defense helped a lot and you
always have to shoot over the zone
to beat it."
That is something. Pitt's highly
touted Panthers, owners of the
nation's longest winning streak this
season at 22 games. did not do,
especially in the first half when the
Gamecocks built up a 30-16 lead.
Pitt shot a poor 27.6 per cent
against Carolina's sticky zone and
its leading scorer Bill Knight, who
averages 22.3 points, had only six
at the half.
Assistant coach Donnie Walsh
said the Gamecocks were keying
on Knight in the zone and picking
him up man-to-man inside the zone
at times.
While the zone worked wonders
at one end of the court, USC, led
by Brian Winters 12 points, hit 46.7
per c'ent from the field in building
up a 14-point halftime lead.
The second half was a question of
whether Pitt could get back in the
game. but the closest they got was
w ithin seven points, even though
they shot 50 per cent, as did USC, in
the second half.
1'SC's backenourt duo of Winters
and Mike Dunleavy accounted for
40 points in the game, with Winters
hign scorer for the game with 23.
lie also surpassed the 1,000-point
mark for his career.
