Accusations and promises were
leveled at a student audience
Wednesday in the Golden Spur by
eight, student-government
presidential candidates.
University governance, ticket
distribution, housing, mandatory
student fees and student in
volvement were the prominent
issues raised by the candidates.
After each candidate presented a
five-minute introduction the floor
was opened for audience questions.
Walter Metz, American Bison
Party candidate, said he wasn't
going to make promises for next
year. "It's a bag of candy tricks.
We won't sell the students out. You
can't buy us because we don't want
anything. The others are saying
the same things only they're
looking at other offices such as city
coun.
The denial of girls' requests for
dorm assignments and other
sexual discrimination by the
university is a major concern of
Jimmy Efird. "I want to institute
24-hour dorm visitation rights," he
said.
John Middleton doesn't think
the university should limit the
freshman class to a certain
number of students. He wants the
curriculum opened more also.
"I'm against the NC system of
grading because many students
could be passing courses with D's'
Leigh Leventis, current student
government vice president, said
Rita McKinney's administration
has been the most effective and
respected government in many
years. He cited better campus
lighting as a big help to students
and related the improvement to the
reduced number of rapes on
campus.
A consumer's bureau for
Carolina students was proposed by
Mike Honeycutt. "Since students
