Carolina's tennis team lost two
players to injuries this week, won
two matches and suffered its first
defeat of the season defeating
Presbyterian 7-2 and The Citadel 9
0 and dropping a match with
Georgia Southern 8-1.
The win over Presbyterian was a
costly one for USC. Freshman star
Bernard Fritz and senior Brian
Desatnik left the match with in
juries that kept them out of
competition in the other two meets.
Coach Ron Smarr reported that
Fritz's status is questionable.
"Bernard injured his back
against Presbyterian and I really
don't know when he will be back
We expect Brian to return against
Appalachian State, but Fritz will
be out for a while," Smarr said.
Despite what was a lopsided
score in favor of the Eagles,
Georgia Southern match was a
close one. Six of the Gamecocks'
losses took three sets and eight of
those sets were either 7-5 or 7-6.
Even with the loss. Smarr was
pleased with his team's play. "I

think we played well." said Smarr.
"Even with two of our top men out
we still hung in there and kept it
close. With the injuries we had to
play everyone available against
Georgia Southern. I have to give
credit where credit is due, though.
They outplayed us and I think they
wanted it more."
Carolina plays its first home
matches of the year this week and
will have their hands full.
Appalachian State will play USC
Tuesday at 2:15 and the Moun
taineers, who are heavy favorites
to win the Southern Conference this
year, may have their best team
ever.
After meets with Purdue and
Richmond USC will play back-to
back meets with powers Virginia
and Penn State on Friday and
Saturday. Both of these teams
were rated in the top twenty teams
in the nation last year and return
most of their top players.
The meets this week begin a
string of 14-straight home meets
that lasts until March 20. when
Carolina takes to the road again to
compete with several Florida
schools.
