The officiating at Carolina
Coliseum was the object of
criticism for the third time in the
past five USC home games after
Carolina dealt struggling Virginia
Tech an 82-71 setback last Wed
nesday night.
"I think if they are going to
disband the goaltending rules they
should do it everywhere,"
VPI Coach Don Devoe said after
the game. "I can't believe those
officials let them get upon the rims
like they did. That allowed them to
get the tempo."
"If there had been any of
ficiating whatsoever out there as
far as judgments of shots and
goaltends, we would have been
right in the game," DeVoe added.
Carolina blocked eight shots and
was called for goaltending only
once during the game.
Hot-handed Brian Winters made
10 of 11 shots from the floor in the
first half to guide the Gamecocks
to a 42-30 halftime lead, and the
Gobblers committed too many
fouls in the second half to
make a eame of it. Carolina made

18 of 21 attempts from the foul line
in the game while Tech
managed only three of six.
Winters drew more attention
from Tech's defense in the
second half, missing all seven field
goal attempts to finish with 21
points, but Alex English and Nate
Davis picked up the pace on the
inside. Davis hit five of eight
field goal attempts in the
second half and English hit six of
eight. Each finished with 19 points.
"They played me a little bit
tougher and left the other guys
free," Winters said.
Mark Cartwright, who tran
sferred last year to Virginia Tech
from Carolina, made a surprise
start for the Gobbler's and con
tributed 14 points, hitting seven of
10 from the floor. Until his starting
assignment Wednesday night,
Cartwright had played four
minutes during the entire season.
"I didn't find out I was going to
start until today," Cartwright said.
"We needed some outside shooting
against zones. It helped me a lot to
know the players I was up
against."
