USC demonstrated the home
court advantage that Carolina
Coliseum has given it, even though
USC lost to Notre Dame, 72-68,
Saturday afternoon there.
Despite shooting a dismal 38 per
cent from the floor and committing
21 fouls, most of them shooting
fouls, the Gamecocks managed to
come within four points of the
nation's third-ranked team.
Still, the advantage was not
enough for the Gamecocks and the
Irish finally put an end to the
Coliseum winning streak which
had reached 34 games.
Strong v4,cal fan support seemed
to bring the Gamecocks back
whenever the Irish threatened to
pull away. And the waving hands
of fans in the end zone sections
may have played a role in Notre
Dame's missing four;f its first six
free throws attempts.

Phelps noticed the crowd reactions

11:46 remaining. Notre Dame's
lead forced Carolina out of its zone
defense into a man-to-man in a
