the Dukes have played without star center Lionel Billingy much of the
year. He's back now and Duquesne is a serious threat. Houston
doesn't seem as strong as the Cougars of recent years, but 6-9 guard
and scoring leader Louis Dunbar could lead Houston by anyone.
Creighton has moved into the nation's top twenty and owns a stunning
upset of Marquette at Milwaukee.
The outcome of the Notre Dame game could effect USC's attitude
toward these other games. A win over Notre Dame should spring the
Gamecocks into these encounters with a high national ranking at
stake. A loss to the Irish could find the Gamecocks struggling to reach
the 20-win goal that just recently seemed within easy reach.
Saturday's game could also bring some real recognition to USC
center Bob Mathias. The 6-7 sophomore has been very impressive
thus far this year, outplaying almost everyone he has faced.
Marquette's Maurice Lucas and Manhattan's Bill Campion, two of
the nation's better centers, were second best to Mathias on the nights
they visited Carolina Coliseum.
Outplaying Notre Dame's John Shumate will not be easy.
Shumate is a scoring machine, hitting 63.7 per cent of his shots and
averaging 23.2 points per game through 19 games. But if Mathias can
handle the 6-9 superstar, All-America mentions for Mathias would not
be too far- fetched.
A win Saturday could be the win of the season. At least until the
postseason playoffs arrive.
